Beware the Mars Hoax!

Recently (and repeatedly), an email message was sent that claims that on August 27th - Mars will be the closest to earth as it has been in 60,000 years (I chose the most fantastic number, but there are variations).  Karen and I thought this was great and started looking for used telescopes.  After all, an event like this doesn't happen every day.

Fortunately, before we spent any money, I did some checking into the claim.  First, I checked into my own chart for that day and found that the moon in in Sagittarius and Mars is in Cancer.  Mars was in the wrong part of the sky to be visible at this point in time!

Then, I stopped by Snopes and found an article titled "Mars Close to Earth " which linked to a NASA page describing the hoax .

So, once again, it has been proven that you can't believe what you read in email.  Do your research! You should really look at the "get-rich-quick" and "get-big-quick" schemes with a sceptical eye.  I haven't heard of many that actually get rich without saving their money.  As far as the pharmaceuticals go, your money is better spent on flowers and/or a night on the town.
